Meet Calvin: Your Go-To Guy Behind the Bar at Rick’s Cabaret Minneapolis

If you've spent any time in downtown Minneapolis’ vibrant nightlife scene, chances are you've heard of Rick’s Cabaret. Just minutes from the Metrodome, Target Center, and Target Field, Rick’s is more than just a high-energy gentleman’s club — it’s a Twin Cities landmark. And standing proudly behind the bar is Calvin, one of the most welcoming and familiar faces at the club.

Calvin is a true Twin Cities native with a personality as bold as his cocktails. He's the kind of bartender who remembers your favorite drink, asks about your day, and delivers top-tier service with a laugh and a smile. And don’t be surprised if he offers a little life advice while he pours — it’s all part of the charm.

Rick’s bar isn’t just any bar either. It’s an eye-catching piece of history, brought in from the original Rick’s location in New Orleans. With its ornate woodwork and classic feel, it sets the stage for an unforgettable night, whether you’re out celebrating or just stopping in for a quick drink.

Get to Know Calvin

  1. How did you first get into bartending, and what led you to eventually join the team at Rick’s Cabaret?
I was actually a regular at Rick’s! One day, they needed someone to fill in behind the bar. I asked a couple of managers for the opportunity, and they gave me a shot. The rest is history.

  2. Do you have a lot of regulars at Rick’s, and what’s it like building relationships with returning customers in a club setting?
I’ve got a few regulars, and it’s always a good time. We chat about life, what’s going on in the world, how their day’s been , it’s like catching up with old friends.

  3. What’s your dynamic like with the entertainers and other staff behind the bar? Do you all have a good rhythm on busy nights?
Absolutely. The chemistry with the bar team is great. We communicate constantly, whether it’s about tabs, drink orders, or just what’s going on in our day. It makes the busy nights run smoothly.

  4. What are some of the most popular drinks guests order here? Any cocktails or shots you find yourself constantly making?
The Old Fashioned is probably the most requested cocktail, but if we’re talking volume, it’s definitely Don Julio Reposado. That one’s flying off the shelf every night.

  5. Do you follow a system for rotating your beer stock, like keeping the freshest on the bottom and moving the older ones up top?
Of course! We rotate the beer stock every two weeks, same thing in the liquor room. It’s all about keeping everything fresh and our customers happy.

  6. What's a typical shift like for you — from setup to last call?
Nonstop movement! I’m setting up the bars, checking glassware, stocking liquor, taking out trash, sweeping the patio, loading ice, clearing bus tubs, and putting away deliveries. All while delivering award-winning service,  it’s a hustle, but I love it.

  7. Have you seen any changes in the nightlife or customer behavior over the years, especially with how people drink or tip?
Definitely. There are good weeks and tough ones. Covid hit everyone hard, and before that, the recession around 2007-2009 really changed things too. But people bounce back, and so does the scene.

  8. What’s your favorite part about working at Rick’s, and what keeps you coming back night after night?
I genuinely enjoy talking to people. I want everyone to have a good time and get home safe. Sometimes, I feel like a bit of a therapist,  unofficially, of course! I just love being around people, whether it’s a celebration or a rough day. That connection keeps me coming back.

So next time you're out in downtown Minneapolis looking for a lively atmosphere, great food, and even better company, stop by Rick’s and ask for Calvin. He’ll have the best recommendations for food, drinks, and entertainers to make your night nothing short of awesome.
